Raceclubs Interviews Victor Consortio
What does it feel like to win your Challenge Series? Although we've won a few finals now the feeling for these two was just the same as the feeling for the first one really. My reaction always seem to be to punch the air and I think Paul ends up running around his living room!
How optimistic were you about winning and who amongst the competition was your biggest rival? We felt we had chances in four out of our six finals. The first winner - Un Chien Andalou - was one of the favourites in our minds. He had a good draw and the going suited him plus we knew he was good enough. He got some luck and didn't disappoint. The Newbury Colts is usually very competitive so any could have been in with a shout but I felt Fleet Signal was going to be a major threat. In the end he ran a good race but finished just out of the money in 5th. Our second winner was Party Politics. Like Chien he was bought with this final in mind and campaigned this season to get there with as little fuss as possible. He got a good draw but the conditions we felt could be against him slightly although we were still confident he could run well if given a chance and he did. Again many of the horses in this race had a chance but I think special mention has to be given to Sam the Bananaman owned by Liveoak and Hail to the Thief owned by Sky Castle as they both ran great races and were unlucky not to do better.
What routines do you follow before the race and who is the first person you share your victory with? I don't have a set routine and for the finals sometime we aren't around so it's just a case of watching them when we can. This time we were both able to watch them on the night. The first person I usually share the victory with is Paul although this time I had my niece and nephews with me so they got to see their uncle shouting at a computer screen like an idiot!
How do you prepare for a Challenge Series race & what advice would you give other trainers? Other than getting your horses as fit as possible there's not a lot else you can do really. The advice we would give is just to try and enjoy the finals as much as possible and not get too downhearted if you are unsuccessful. We've had nearly 50 finalists now so like most we've lost a lot more than we've won and you've just got to take the rough with the smooth basically. Just enjoy them for what they are.
How do you celebrate winning Championship Series & how are you going to spend your winnings? lol no idea what we'll be spending the winnings on to be honest. Christmas is just around the corner so it might come in handy there but we like to re-invest in the stable as well if the opportunity arises so we shall see.
