HANDICAPPING

Handicapping is simply the additional weight handicap (penalty), measured in Pounds (lbs), that is awarded to a horse that has had more wins relative to other horses in a particular race.

The handicap will slow a horse down slightly and an allowance will benefit a horse relative to the rest of the field. This makes a race more competitive.

Handicapping in this manner, is an age-old racing tradition that works in real racing and now in virtual racing, where it is part of an owners racing strategy.

The base weight in each race on which penalties and allowances are applied is 120lbs. This is the combined base weight of the jockey, saddle and equipment on the horse.

Handicap based on Wins:
Win Eligibility Wins Base Weight Penalty Weight Carried
EG1: 0 to 1 wins 1 120 lbs 6lbs 126 lbs (120 + 6 lbs)
EG2: 4 - 10 wins 10 120 lbs 4lbs 140 lbs (120 + (6 wins X 4 lbs) = 144)

In a handicap race for 4 to 10 time winners, a horse with 10 wins will carry more weight than a horse with only 4 wins. The horse with 10 wins will carry 6(10-4) times the specified weight penalty per win. This penalty per win is 4lbs in the above example, so the calculated penalty added to the base of 120lbs is 24lbs. In the above example you will see how the total weight carried is limited to 140lbs. This weight penalty will vary depending on the race category. The penalty is applied per incremental win over the qualifying win count for the race category.

Where no handicapping is specified, the race is run at level weights, which means that all horses carry the same weight.

Allowance for Non Wins:
Win Eligibility Wins Base Weight Penalty Weight Carried
EG3: Irrelevant 5 120 lbs -2lbs 110 lbs (120 – 2x5 lbs)
Non Wins is the number of times run since last winning a race. Note that Non Wins are not relevant to eligibility for Special Allowance races in which this allowance may be applicable. Non Wins in Special Allowance races, is only used for determining the allowance.

Allowance for Sex:
Sex Eligibility Sex Base Weight Penalty Weight Carried
EG4: Colts and Fillies Filly 120 lbs -10lbs 110 lbs (120 - 10 lbs)
When fillies race with Colts, an allowance is normally awarded to fillies.

Allowance for Average Lengths Behind Leader (Lbl):
Win Eligibility Average Lbl* Base Weight Penalty Weight Carried
EG5: Irrelevant Filly 120 lbs -2lbs 116 lbs (120 – 4 (2 x -2) lbs)
The average length behind leader (lbl*) value is calculated over the last 5 races and rounded down to the nearest integer before applying the allowance per lbl. In the above example, the average lbl value could have been 2.45, but is rounded down to 2.

Allowances and penalties are usually applied in combination in races. For more detail on how this works, please refer to the download handicap calculator.

IMPORTANT - A win in a claiming race will not count towards penalties applied in handicapping of other races. Claiming race wins will however impact allowances applied in handicapping such as in determining the number of runs since last win.
